Part 3 — Vocabulary
Supplement label terms, defined
Five phrases that appear on nearly every panel, and what each one actually means.
- Supplement Facts panel
- The boxed table required on a dietary supplement in the United States. It states the serving size, the number of servings per container, and each dietary ingredient with its amount per serving. It is the only part of the packaging where amounts must be disclosed.
- Proprietary blend
- A group of ingredients listed under a single combined weight instead of individual amounts. The total is disclosed; the split between ingredients is not. A blend can legally contain a large amount of the cheapest ingredient and a trace of the rest.
- Daily Value (%DV)
- The percentage of the recommended daily intake that one serving provides. Many botanical ingredients have no established Daily Value, which is why panels mark them “**” or “DV not established”. That marking is normal and is not a red flag.
- Latin binomial
- The two-part scientific name of a plant, such as Lepidium meyenii for maca. Common names vary by region and marketing; the binomial identifies the exact species used.
- Extract
- A concentrated preparation made by drawing compounds out of raw plant material with a solvent such as water or alcohol. “100 mg of extract” is not the same quantity as 100 mg of the raw root, so extracts and raw powders cannot be compared milligram for milligram.
